Day Seven

Woke up to our first day in winnipeg. A bit cool and grey out. Headed out to Lower Fort Gary as our first destination. Lower Fort Gary was a major outpost for the Hudson's Bay Company. We met lots of characters who lived at the fort including some of the upper class and some lower class servers. The girls thought the fort was cool. We compared the size of the farm manager's house to the original part of our house. Farm manager's house was bigger which tells you something about how important he was. The girls enjoyed seeing the big house (where the company director lived). It was a large home indeed. Back in the village beyond the fort, the blacksmith was quite informative and told us about how goods were shipped by river up to York Factory (on Hudson's Bay) for loading to go to England. We also saw white pelicans flying around on the Red River.

After lunch we drove down to the Manitoba Museum. Saw the Nonsuch which is a full replica of the first fur trading boat to sail from England. They also had a few other interesting priarie dioramas.

We then went down to The Forks which is where the Assiniboine and the Red Rivers meet. It is a large railyard that has been converted to a park and restaurant area. Walked around The Forks for a bit and had dinner there.

Returned to the hotel room and had a swim.
