Day Six
My goodness Northern Ontario can be cold! We packed up this morning and were on our way by 9:15 AM. We are getting better at it! Two more porcupines and another fox with its breakfast spotted on the way out. Not sure if the fox was a red or mixed fox. We headed to Thunder Bay and stopped at the Terry Fox memorial. Extremely moving! Kaitlin and Brenna with the help of the computer navigated us into town to find a Future Shop so that Daddy could update our blog. While he was doing that, the girls headed for Chapters and found many books on the sale table that could be read and dropped somewhere for someone else. Lunch in Thunder Bay and off to see the rest of Highway 17!
We saw lots of trees, streams, lakes, rocks, and people planting trees. We saw 2 moose as roadkill, one with a big rack. Not very nice, but for the first time we saw turkey vultures doing their job -- 4 of them. In Dryden we saw a large moose statue, which Brenna commented on "That's a moose! They could do better than that!" The weather remained cold, windy and wet (off and on). At around 1:00pm Central time we decided to forge ahead to Manitoba and not camp in Aaron as originally planned. The girls were travelling wonderfully. This way we would not have to put tents up and down for 2 days in a row. We had a quick Tim Horton's supper in sunny Kenora. Kenora has a giant Musky by the lake as their mascot.
As we drove closer to Manitoba (only 45 min or so away) it got darker and darker, lightning and then the pouring rain! How lovely to set up tents in that weather! So as you hit Manitoba and the 4 lane highway and cell phone capabilities, we called our Winnipeg hotel and moved our reservations up two nights and we are now staying in Winnipeg for Wed, Thurs and Friday night.
On this lovely highway we spotted vultures doing their job on a deer this time. For the first time for Margot, we saw a Bald Eagle flying in the wild! Most spetacular! We passed the longitudal centre of Canada at 8:27 Central time. Officially saw our first Grain Elevator. This highway is straight and boy is the land flat! All you see is farms with woodlots as far as you can see.
Checked in and everyone is showered and ready or already asleep ready for more adventures in Winnipeg.
